Parenting An Alpha Delta Delta
Alpha Delta Delta Founder Mike J Quinn's blog about his personal experience parenting a child with ADHD.
After raising a child with ADHD and watching him struggle to find his place in this world, I am now free to look back on my experiences with more clarity than when I was struggling though it. Hopefully my experience can help those who struggle today.
About Us
The idea behind Alpha Delta Delta all began when my oldest son mentioned that ADD was "Alpha Delta Delta" in latin, and the name for the fraternity was born.
After several moths of struggling with getting my ADHD son to take his medications and stop denying he even had ADHD, I was reading some literature on the subject and there was an article on some of the more famous historical figures who more than likely had ADD themselves. The list was impressive. Athletes, explorers, scientists, politicians, entertainers, inventors, captains of industry; world changing people. Then the idea solidified. These people all belonged to the same club- fraternity. I created a t-shirt for my son that had the names of all these people on the back and the greek ADD letters for the fraternity and explained to him that he was now in an elite group of people without which this world would not be at all like it is now. He loved it. He wore the t-shirt with pride and he began taking his medications again. His self-esteem rose considerably too. I couldn't believe it. All this done by a simple t-shirt. This worked so well that I got the ideas for more t-shirts and the "Attitudes" and "Rules" themes were invented. These helped sustain the gains made by the first series of shirts and we actually began having fun with ADD. No longer was ADHD the big, ugly elephant in the room.
I hope you all have the same results I did and begin having fun with having ADD and looking for creative strategies for coping with the difficulties and celebrating the benefits.
